I know what you’re thinking, the title of this post is just a little bit dramatic but it’s true, I’m leaving the country and I have some really exciting plans for the rest of the year and beyond and I feel like since I’ve just sent my passport off to the Thai Embassy, so this is officially happening, now would be a suitable time to fill you all in, so here goes:
In around two months time, James and I will be heading on a round the World adventure, starting in South East Asia. Travelling around South East Asia is something that both of us have wanted to tick off our bucket lists for a while now – we actually began planning a trip to Thailand back in 2016 – let me tell you a bit of the back story.
Back in 2016, we both knew that we wanted to travel but at this point, James had just started university so it was something that wasn’t within our current reach. In the meantime, we decided that we wanted to see a bit more of the World than we would usually see on a 2 week holiday, so we started planning a 3 week backpacking trip to Thailand. For whatever reason, the trip never happened. Instead, we ended up Interrailing around Europe. We had the most incredible time and that was it, we’d caught the travel bug.
Things then changed, James dropped out of uni, we got a flat together and then, about a month into moving in, we decided that we weren’t happy with our lifestyle. Neither of us were happy in our jobs and we didn’t want to get to a place where we stayed put because we were ‘comfortable’ – so we decided that once our 1 year tenancy was up, we’d move back home to save money as quick as possible and then book a one-way flight to Bangkok and just see where we ended up.
So that’s what we did. With no return flight booked and no intention to head back any time soon, the plan is to travel around South East Asia for around 5 months, visiting countries including: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines and Indonesia, before we get settled in Australia for our (hopefully) two year Working Holiday Visa. After that, who knows?
For the last four years, we have dreamt about dropping everything and going travelling but it’s finally starting to feel real as our departure date creeps closer and closer. This is the first time in a good few years that I’m actually happy about what I’m doing with my life. Whenever anyone would ask me what my ‘back up plan’ was, I would always say ‘to just travel the World’.
This is definitely the most exciting thing we’ve ever done and I can’t wait to see where it takes us!
Let the countdown begin!
